When converting WebP to PNG actually helps
The most common reason to convert WebP into PNG is compatibility. Some older photo editors, in-house workflows, and print shops still don't accept WebP, and PNG goes through cleanly. If the WebP has an alpha channel, the transparency carries over, so you can keep working on it in a design tool.
The file usually grows in the process. WebP packs the same quality into a smaller container, so PNG copies often end up two to five times bigger. Keep the original WebP for the web, and treat the PNG as an editing or archival copy rather than the file you upload again.
The conversion itself doesn't add new loss. If the WebP was saved in lossy mode, that quality level carries into the PNG unchanged, and PNG doesn't introduce fresh damage. That said, any compression artifacts already baked into the WebP won't get sharper just because the file is PNG now.
