What to know before converting JPG to PNG
Switching from JPG to PNG doesn't bring back lost quality. PNG is lossless, so no further degradation builds up after the conversion, but the detail JPG already discarded stays gone. The biggest payoff comes when you plan to edit, composite, or save the image many more times.
Expect the file to grow almost every time. Photos typically swell 5 to 10 times in size, and landscape or portrait shots with rich colors balloon even more. Keep the PNG for your archive and editing workflow, and produce JPG or WebP copies for messengers and social media when you share.
A transparent background doesn't get added automatically. Every part of the original is preserved during the conversion, so if you need to remove a white backdrop, run the image through a background-removal tool. Anything that has to start with empty space is easier to receive as PNG from the source.
