Moving HEIC into PNG lets you bring the photo into any editor, design tool, or print shop without losing detail. For Instagram composites or business-card masters that go through several rounds of edits, PNG is safer than JPG because it doesn't pile up compression artifacts each time you save.
The trade-off is file size. A 1.5 MB HEIC often expands to 5 to 10 MB when saved as PNG. For long-term storage, keep the HEIC original on hand and use PNG only as a working copy for editing or print so your cloud storage doesn't fill up.
Location and camera details are stripped during the conversion, so the PNG holds only the picture itself. You can send the result to friends or social media without worrying about GPS coordinates tagging along. If the capture time or camera model matters for your archive, back up the original HEIC first.
