Things to know when compressing JPG into WebP
Saving an already-compressed JPG as WebP drops the file size another 25 to 35 percent on average, but you're compressing the same image twice, so a small amount of extra loss is unavoidable. Pushing the lossy quality too low can leave splotchy patches in skies and flat backgrounds, so a setting around 90 stays safe.
If your JPG is already small or visibly blurry, the conversion won't save much. The biggest gains come from large DSLR photos and product shots where the original still holds plenty of detail. Compare the file sizes before and after, and skip the conversion if the savings don't justify the extra step.
WebP supports an alpha channel, but the source JPG has no transparent areas, so the background stays filled after the conversion. If you need a transparent logo as the result, start from a PNG original or a vector file from your design tool.
